And the engineer who came around a curve in 1900, told his fireman to jump, and stayed on the brake so everybody behind him lived.

A Georgia overdrive is the old trucker trick the song is named for: knock her out of gear on the downgrade and let the weight of the load do the driving. Forty tons, no engine, no way to take it back.
